On 11/26/13, at approximately 1:35 PM, officers responded to assist Benton Animal Control officers on a call of four dogs fighting in the front yard of an address on Gibson Street.  Animal control officers and a patrol officer made contact with the citizen complainant who informed them four dogs had been viciously fighting and that one appeared to be severely injured and was still being attacked.

The complainant said they spoke with the dog’s owner, but that he could not respond and attempts to make contact with the owner by animal control were unsuccessful.  One of the dogs had visibly apparent open injuries to its neck area therefore animal control officers attempted to separate it from the other dogs for treatment. After leashing the injured dog, another dog (Doberman breed) then attacked it again and animal control officers attempted to again separate the dogs when the aggressive dog turned and started to attack them.

At this time the patrol officer discharged his duty pistol once to keep the animal from biting him or one of the animal control officers.  Due to the severe injury the dog received, animal control administered Ketamine to sedate the dog and allow it to expire humanly.

Due to the discharging of a duty weapon there will be a use of force review done on the incident, which is standard procedure.
