In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 58 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.
This year we will be honoring 273 Law Enforcement Officers who died serving and protecting others. On Monday, May 11, 2015 at 10:00 am, there will be a Saline County Peace Officers Memorial Service. It will be held at the Gazebo at the Saline County Courthouse. You are cordially invited to attend this 2015 Memorial Service honoring all who have given their lives in the line of duty.
You are asked to “Fly The Blue” ribbon on your car antenna, place a blue bow on the front of your home or business, and display a blue light on your porch. If you see an officer, tell them “Thank You”. Cards and letters of appreciation are always welcome at all departments. Recognition of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and those who daily protect and serve is greatly appreciated.
