Benton Police Department will host “Hooked on Outdoors” fishing derby and outdoor event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at Sunset Lake in Benton. Registration for the fishing derby (open to ages 12 and under) is free and will begin at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event. All participants will need to bring a fishing pole and bait. Other activities are open to all ages.
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will provide truckloads of fish for participants to catch, and a grand prize will be awarded to the boy and girl who catch the largest catfish. Smallest catch prizes will also be awarded. Additionally, door prizes will be announced during the event. Lt. Larry Applegarth of BNPD helps organize the derby and said the effort that goes into it is always well worth it.
“We all know what an impact technology has had on society- both good and bad, particularly for our youth, so to see kids enjoying the outdoors is extremely rewarding to all involved. It not only teaches them a potential lifelong hobby but allows further opportunity for officers and kids to have positive interaction, something Benton PD prides itself on.”
He added that there will be additional activities this year, which is the reason for the event name change.
“The fishing derby remains the main event,” he said, “but Benton Animal Control will be on site with adoptable animals, and we plan to have canoeing again this year courtesy of Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.” He added that a few vendors are still in the works, but there may be the option of purchasing snacks.
Current event sponsors include Benton Fraternal Order of Police, in addition to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Sponsors are still being sought to help provide prizes and giveaways for the event.
