Patrol vehicles will be loaded with cane poles, fishing rods, lures and lots of prizes to hand out to children this week. The annual “Hooked On Fishing” fishing derby will be held from 9-11 a.m. Thursday, June 16 at Sunset Lake in Benton. The tournament is open to children ages 12 and younger, and there is no cost for registration which begins at 8:30 a.m.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will be providing truckloads of fish prior to the start of the event. Names of the registered children will be called out during the event to collect door prizes. A grand prize will also be awarded to the boy and girl who catch the largest catfish in the lake.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing pole with them to the event. This program is part of the #KidsFirst initiative and officers will help teach children the basics of fishing and reward them with prizes in various categories. Sponsors of the event are Lisa’s Bait Shop, Mac’s Minnows and More, Walmart, Golden K Kiwanis, Academy Sports, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and the Benton Police Department.
