OFFICERS CONDUCTING FOOT PATROL APPREHEND ACCIDENT AND DWI SUSPECT IN THE ACT

TreyHesselbein2On 2/25/14, at approximately 10:24 PM, patrol officers with the Benton Police Department were conducting foot patrols at Dogwood Lakes Apartments due to recent criminal activity in the area.  While there, officers heard loud noises from behind one of the buildings and observed a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle prior to it leaving the property after it initially refused to stop.  Contact was made with the driver, Trey Hesselbein (19 YOA) of Benton, who at first wouldn’t cooperate with officers who asked him to exit his vehicle.  Hesselbein was eventually removed from the vehicle and after a short scuffle with officers he was taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed that four vehicles had been damaged in front of one of the apartment buildings where officers first heard loud noises.  Based on damage to Hesselbein’s vehicle and witness statements, it was determined that he was responsible for damaging the vehicles just prior to making contact with officers.  Estimated damage to the victim’s four vehicles is estimated at approximately $10,000.

Hesselbein is charged with 1 count of Criminal Mischief  (Felony), 3 counts of Criminal Mischief (Misdemeanor), 4 counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Careless Driving, DWI, Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test, Possession of a Controlled Substance (marijuana), Terroristic Threatening 2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest.  This is an on-going investigation and additional charges could be forthcoming.
