Benton Police Department will participate in the nationwide speed enforcement campaign entitled “Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine” July 16-22. Violators will be stopped and ticketed.

Lt. Connell of BNPD said the campaign is designed as a means for law enforcement across the nation to further protect the residents of their communities.

“Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to respond in a timely manner to the unexpected and puts both drivers and passengers at tremendous risk. In short, speeding translates to death on our roadways.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a contributing factor in 27 percent of all fatal crashes in the U.S. in 2015. More than 9,500 lives were lost in such crashes.

“Driving above the speed limit in any conditions dramatically increases the chances a motorist will be involved in a crash,” said Connell. “During this enforcement- and beyond- officers will be ticketing speeding drivers with the end goal of saving lives and increasing driver alertness. No warnings or excuses: we expect drivers to obey the sign or pay the fine.”
